Why is it Important for Poker Players to Know the Rake?
There are two simple reasons:
- Players should know how much they will actually win when they win a pot. This is the ho-hum reason why poker players should know the rake.
- Players can use the expected rake to better calculate pot odds.
How Does Juicy Stakes Poker Calculate the Rake?

We call the rake a “scaled commission fee”. Everyone knows what a commission is. Our rake is scaled so that the rake percentage is lower for small pots.
Clearly, if you are playing in a relatively high-stakes game where the pots are generally bigger, the rake will be higher and your pot odds will change accordingly.
Let’s Learn All About Rake at Juicy Stakes Poker
Now, the first thing you will notice is that we have four levels of rake. These levels are based on the stakes in the game you are playing.
If you look closely, you will see that the rake is one penny for every twenty cents in the pot.
However, and this is the key to fully understanding rake, there is a maximum rake amount based on the stakes level and the number of players. The maximum rake in the lowest stakes games is only $2.00 while the maximum rake even for a pot with $100 in it is only $5!
Finally, you need to know that if a hand ends before the flop, there is no rake at all!

Do You Know the Rules of Texas Hold’em?

Texas Hold’em has taken the poker world by storm! So much so that there are a lot of players who don’t know how to play Omaha! This is quite amazing since Omaha was the premier variation of poker at poker rooms until Texas Hold’em so unceremoniously took over the poker world!
Let’s Learn How to Play Omaha
A lot of players believe that Texas Hold’em introduced the idea of community cards. Actually, there are five community cards in Omaha!
Each player receives 4 hole cards! There is a round of betting before the flop. Then come the flop and two other streets.
Now, you probably have noticed that each player has access to 9 cards! This alone is a huge difference between Omaha and Texas Hold’em!
But there is more! Each player has to use only 2 hole cards and 3 community cards to make their hand! We repeat this amazing rule because it is so central to Omaha: players have to use exactly (and only) 2 hole cards and 3 community cards to make their hand.
How is an Omaha Hand Played?
Once you have accepted and understood that there are 4 hole cards and 9 cards in total in Omaha and that you have to use 2 and only 2 hole cards along with 3 community cards, then Omaha plays almost exactly like Texas Hold’em.
We could say that Texas Hold’em is a variation of Omaha!
What are the Rules for Omaha Hi-Lo?
Omaha Hi-Lo has the same rules as Omaha with the very significant exception that a player can also win the low hand and therefore two players can split the pot!
Now, keep in mind that players use 2 hole cards and 3 community cards to form a hi or a low hand.
If there are both a qualified high hand and a qualified low hand, the pot will be split between the winner of the high hand and the winner of the low hand.
What is a Qualified Hand?
On the high side of Omaha Hi-Lo, any hand qualifies as the high hand although there are a very large number of “high” hands that players fold because they are clearly not high enough!
To qualify as a low hand, the highest card cannot be higher than an 8. A 9-high low hand is not a low hand in Omaha Hi-Lo!
Straights and flushes do not count in the low side of Omaha Hi-Lo. This means that a straight from ace to 5 is the best low hand possible. Similarly, any five cards that qualify as a low hand constitute a low hand even if they are all of the same suit!
The high hand wins the entire pot if there is no qualifying low hand!
Did Doyle Brunson Like Omaha Hi-Lo?
The poker world is still mourning the passing of a true giant of poker, Doyle Brunson. There is a slight misconception in some stories about Doyle Brunson: that he preferred Omaha Hi-Lo to Texas Hold’em.
We have no first-hand knowledge that that was the case. What we do know is that Doyle Brunson loved Razz which is, basically, seven-card stud low.
